Cicero's Senior Director leads charge to eliminate sub-minimum wage

February 16, 2024

Cicero supports bill to eliminate sub-minimum tipped wages for employees and argues in favor of strengthening our working people, restaurant industry, and eliminating the sub-minimum tipped wage in legislation being considered by the state.

The legislation would help raise wages for many restaurant worker and for many seniors who work part time jobs but who rely on tips for the wages. If passed, the legislation would require that they receive the minimum wage guaranteed for all workers in Illinois.

“I am proud to be here today on behalf of Cicero to express our strong support for this legislation, which will eliminate the sub-minimum tipped wage, support working people in Cicero, and keep our restaurant industry thriving," Mrs. Dominick said at a press briefing in front of the Illinois State House.

“For our workers, that can often mean better wages and worker protections just across the border, especially for restaurant workers. And for our employers, that can mean a struggle to attract enough labor to fill shifts." The City of Chicago is eliminating its tipped sub-minimum wage, and Mrs. Dominick said it was important that suburban communities like Cicero take action to ensure they are not at a disadvantage.

“We hear from restaurant workers all the time, who want to know why they have to work in Chicago to receive these strong protections. And we also hear from restaurant owners who struggle to find enough workers to fill their shifts," Mrs. Dominick said. “With this legislation, we can support both employers and employees alike. And by implementing this change quickly, we can give Cicero workers a leg up on the competition." The bill is sponsored by State Rep. Lisa Hernandez and State Senator Javier Cervantes. Mrs. Dominick as joined in Springfield by Cicero Trustee Blanca Vargas.
